Day 0 – Dublin, Ireland – “I’m surrounded by gadgets!”

I feel like I’m about to invade a small country.

With a rucksack full to the brim with t-shirts and other unsuitable clothing for the Canadian, New Zealand, Australian and other climates I’ll be experiencing, I’ve spent the majority of the day with more important tasks – installing software on my netbook and charging/prepping all forms of gadgetry in order to last three months in the wild.

I will catch up on a bucket of reading I have so shamefully neglected (Mr. Stephenson, I would like to rekindle our relationship) while finally managing to get to all those PSP games I’ve ignored since Japan. Then there is the constant allure of the written word and a return to my Japanese studios head-on. This trip will be an exercise in erudition and indolence. In that order.

Tomorrow morning we finally take to the skies and travel forever westwards until we meet Dublin again on the other side. Well, that’s not entirely true as in the great tradition of one step forward and two steps back, we’ll be going east first to Heathrow before crisscrossing back over Ireland to Montréal.  But then it’s west all the way – never looking back. But no matter how much preparation I’ve put in, I still can’t help but feel that I’m forgetting nearly everything. I suppose that’s half the adventure.

I’ll be chronicling the entire trip here, warts and all. Sit back and watch what happens when someone who is “planning adverse” decides to travel around the world in 96 days.  I have no idea what’s going to happpen. I can assure you it will be eventful though.

Tomorrow, London and then Montréal where I believe I may have reservations somewhere to throw my weary bones in an ungraceful heap. I could be wrong however. I guess I’ll find out (eh?).
